joan of arc
as brave as any man
you struggled on your own
and never seemed to win the battle
that raged within you
despite your victories
despite your laurels
martyr and heroine
were you ever satisfied by these honors?
you wrestled with the angel
and never prevailed
you suffered for a new name
when it was all said and done
i'll say it was noble
did you breath in the smoke
and say well done
no regrets
a higher calling i have lead
a legacy to follow?
or did you fear the shadow?
as your demons screamed their final torment
as you surrendered you soul to the fire
only to walk out on the other side
purified
as gold
a saint
in the presence of God
finally at rest
leaving behind...
the shroud of this moral struggle
a heap of ash upon the ground
a reminder of the human condition
a reminder of our frailty
and the soul's quest for justice
...and those who weep
-------
for something beautiful has left us
moved us
called us to stand in the fires of our making
